Seseh vs Canggu: Where to Rent a Villa in Bali

The short answer

Choose Canggu if you want everything on your doorstep – cafés, gyms, co-working, restaurants, nightlife and schools. Choose Seseh if you want calm, rice fields and an uncrowded beach, and are happy to drive about 15 minutes for the busier spots.

Many people split the difference by living in Pererenan, which sits between the two.

Where they are

Canggu is really several neighbourhoods run together – Batu Bolong, Berawa, Babakan, Padonan and Tibubeneng among them – on Bali's south-west coast in Badung regency. Seseh is a beachside village in the wider Munggu area, a little further north-west past Pererenan.

In normal traffic Seseh is usually about 15 minutes from central Canggu and about 7 minutes from Pererenan. From either area the drive to Ngurah Rai Airport can be about an hour or more, depending on traffic and time of day.

Beaches and pace of life

Canggu's beaches – Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa – are lively, with surf schools, beach clubs and crowds at sunset. Seseh Beach is a wide stretch of black volcanic sand with only a few small warungs, a small temple on the shore, and open sunsets towards Tanah Lot.

Neither area has a calm swimming beach. Currents on this coast are strong and many stretches have no lifeguards, so most families swim in their villa pool. Seseh's waves suit confident intermediate surfers. Beginners usually take lessons in Canggu or Pererenan.

For remote workers

• Canggu: the widest choice of co-working spaces, laptop-friendly cafés and networking events, and easy meetups. The trade-off is traffic and noise.
• Seseh: quiet days for deep work, with Pererenan's cafés about 7 minutes away when you want company. Ask about fibre internet and power backup before signing, because coverage can vary by street.

For families

• Canggu has most of the area's international schools, clinics, supermarkets and kids' activities close by. Shorter school runs are a big plus.
• Seseh offers more space, quieter streets and village life, but expect about 15–20 minutes to many Canggu schools and services.

Cafés, food and everyday errands

Canggu has one of the densest café and restaurant scenes in Bali, plus large supermarkets and gyms. Seseh has a few warungs and cafés of its own, with supermarkets, pharmacies and Pererenan's restaurants a short drive away. Delivery apps cover both areas.

Getting around

A scooter or a driver makes life easier in both places. Canggu traffic can be slow at peak times, especially on the shortcut roads, while Seseh's village lanes are quieter but narrow. Ride-hailing apps work in both areas.

Further west: Kedungu

If you love Seseh's calm, the coast continues west towards Kedungu. Example: a newly built 1-bedroom apartment in Kedungu, 5 minutes from the beach, at IDR 25 million per month all inclusive (daily cleaning, electricity and WiFi included).
